HFH Simulation Center

Henry Ford Hospital and the Henry Ford Medical Group take pride in being innovators when it comes to teaching the art of healing. More than $5 million has been invested in building a state-of-the-art, 12,000 square foot Clinical Skills Simulation Center at Henry Ford Hospital. Key features of the center include procedural simulation technologies using mannequins and other mechanical devices with live and archived video capabilities.

The facility houses an ED Resuscitation Room and ICU Suite, four clinical rooms, a minimally invasive procedure lab with more than 30 stations, two operating theaters (one with a daVinci robot system) and two classrooms. Fully-equipped, reconfigurable rooms simulate emergency sitations, intensive care, surgery, labor and delivery and routine hospital scenarios.

The center will used to advance the curriculum and assess competencies of residents, physicians and other health care workers in the areas of inter-professional team communications, patient safety and doctor/patient communication skills. The Emergency Department has been a major contributor to the development of the Simulation Center, and will extensively utilize the center in trainings it's residents.

There are full-body, high-fidelity adult and pediatric mannequins as well as mannequins for pelvic exam, blood pressure, post-partum hemorrhage and CPR/Defibrillation. Some of the mannequins will be used to train for:

  • Resuscitation, including team training
  • Central line placement utilizing ultrasound guidance
  • Difficult airway scenarios
  • Complex simulation of airway, heart, lung, and monitoring including CPR, and defibrillation.
  • Eye, pelvic, prostate exams, lumbar puncture and knee arthrocentesis simulators
  • Trauma - SimMan can be used for team training, trauma skills, and ER resuscitation simulations.
  • Eye surgery
  • Robot-Assisted, Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Birthing - Gaumard NOELLE™ is a maternal and neonatal birth simulator
  • Endoscopy and Laparoscopy Simulators - These simulators allow users to perform a variety of endoscopic procedures: flexible bronchoscopy, upper endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy and laparoscopic surgery.
