In addition, the program offers certain special electives that deserve individual attention.

Wyoming

An excellent opportunity in community and wilderness medicine is available at St. John’s Medical Center in Jackson Hole. Residents treat patients with blunt trauma and sports related injuries, cardiovascular emergencies and wild animal related injuries. With 15 scheduled shifts, there is plenty of opportunity to explore the magnificence of Wyoming and Montana, including fishing, hiking, rafting, sightseeing and exploring Yellowstone national park.

HawaiiHawaii

Like the Wyoming rotation, the Hawaii rotation offers an excellent experience in community medicine. Located at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Honolulu, this emergency department offers a unique opportunity to treat tropical and marine diseases. Residents can participate in the treatment of diving injuries utilizing the hyperbaric chamber. Residents are provided with housing, rental car, and travel expenses for this month. With 15 scheduled shifts, there is ample time to explore this island paradise.

Early Intervention Team (Critical Care)

Even before pioneering Early Goal-Directed Therapy, HFH has been at the forefront of EM Critical Care for many years. During the EIT elective residents spend their time taking care of the most critically ill patients coming through the ED. They receive extensive evidence-based training in managing every aspect of critical care under the supervision of highly trained ED critical care faculty, many of whom are internationally recognized pioneers in their field. The curriculum incorporates novel drug therapy, hemodynamic assessment, fluid resuscitation, vasopressor selection and management, invasive and non-invasive ventilation strategies and cardiac ultrasound.
