  • CV (ERAS generated)

  • Dean’s Letter

We accept applications through ERAS. Only completed applications are reviewed by the Education Committee.

All aspects of the application are considered and scored. These scores form the basis for granting interviews and resident selection.

How long is the training program?

We have a three year categorical EM program (PGY 1-3), a five year Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine combined program, and a six-year program leading to board certification in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Critical Care. Further details on EM program are available here.

Can you tell me more about the EM/IM and EM/IM/CC combined programs?

Please review the overview pages for EM/IM and Critical Care, any further questions are welcome.

How can I apply to the EM/IM/Critical Care Program?

Applicants interested in this program should apply for the EM/IM Residency. The first four years of both combined programs are identical - residents must decide if they want to pursue the EM/IM/CC program before the end of their third year.

Is there a research requirement for residents?

Our Department has a long history of producing quality research. Scholarly activity is strongly encouraged throughout the residency, although a research project is not required for categorical EM residents. The EM/IM residents are required to complete at least one research project.

Do you participate in the Match?

Yes, we participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Please note that you must apply separately to ERAS and to the NRMP.

What are the minimum score requirements for Step 1 & 2?

There is no minimum score requirement. All aspects of the application are considered and scored. These scores for the basis for granting interviews and resident selection.

What is the last date for applying to the programs?

This year, we will stop downloading application materials from ERAS on December 31. Please have a completed application ready prior to this date if you wish to be considered for a residency spot.

When are interviews conducted?

Interviews are scheduled starting late November and through January.

I sent my application to you, but it has not been downloaded. What should I do?

We begin downloading applications on September 15 and end December 31. Please have a completed application ready during this time period. If you have questions, please contact us.

Can osteopathic graduates (DO) apply?

Our PGY-1 year is not dual accredited as a MD/DO program and the State of Michigan requires all osteopathic graduates to complete a formal accredited osteopathic internship. Students who have not completed this internship are encouraged to apply for the PGY-1 spot after completing the same.

Do you sponsor J-1 or H-1 visas?

At this time, we are only sponsoring a J-1 visa for international medical graduates (IMGs). IMGs who are not United States citizens (or equivalent) must also include a Ministry of Health Letter from the country of most recent legal permanent residency. The letter must be prepared on the official letterhead of the Ministry of Health, bear the seal of that government, and be signed by the duly designated official. The letter must provide a statement of need for the specialty in which training is being requested. Please apply through ERAS by contacting the ECFMG at (215) 386-5900.

Any additional questions concerning VISA, you may contact the Henry Ford Health System Graduate Medical Education office at (313) 916-1601.

Are there any special requirements for IMGs? How do I apply for an observership?

In addition to the requirements above, International Medical Graduates are strongly advised to have US experience (preferably in EM) prior to applying. Unfortunately, due to the prevalent healthcare regulations, we cannot offer any observerships.

My question isn't listed here!

Please feel free to contact us at any time. Best of luck in securing the residency of your choice.
