Henry Ford Health System is one of the nation's leading health care providers, offering a seamless array of acute, primary, tertiary, quaternary and preventive care backed by excellence in research and education.

 

Henry Ford, a Michigan non-profit health care enterprise governed by community leaders, records $3.05 billion in revenues annually while providing $124 million in uncompensated care. The system recorded $112 million in net income in 2005. The system is governed by a 45-member board. Advisory and affiliate boards comprised of 220 trustees provide vital links to the communities served by the system. Henry Ford is managed by President and Chief Executive Officer Nancy Schlichting.

 

More than 14,900 full-time equivalent employees, including 3,000 nurses and more than 4,000 allied health professionals provide care during more than 2.5 million patient contacts. Henry Ford health care providers perform more than 50,000 ambulatory surgery procedures each year.

Nearly 70,000 patients are admitted to Henry Ford hospitals each year.

Specialty Centers

HFHS is home to a number of specialty centers. This provides an advantage to emergency medicine and EM/IM residents who will be exposed to a broad variety of special populations. Examples include:

 

Heart and Vascular Institute - A leader and innovator in comprehensive care, research and education offering one of the nation's largest and most successful heart failure and transplant programs. Specialties include electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, rehab, cardiac and vascular surgery.

 

Josephine Ford Cancer Center - One of the largest cancer centers in Michigan provides a variety of services in six treatment facilities throughout southeast Michigan, including the Henry Ford Novalis® Shaped Beam Surgery Program, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgical oncology and support groups.

 

Henry Ford Transplant Institute- The institute is nationally recognized for heart, lung, kidney, kidney-pancreas, liver and cornea transplantation, and has its own organ donor program called LifeShare. It’s the most comprehensive transplant program in metro Detroit, and the survivor rates of its patients exceed the national average.

 

Neuroscience Institute - One of the top programs in the country that includes a National Institutes of Health stroke care and research center, a comprehensive epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease treatment and surgery program; one of the largest neurosurgery spine programs in Michigan; and the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center.

 

Orthopedics and Rehabilitative Medicine - Team doctors for the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Red Wings, the department cares for patients with a variety of bone and joint ailments, including osteoporosis, and provides the latest advances in joint replacement.

 

Vattikuti Urology Institute - One of the leading prostate cancer programs in the world where patients have access to the some of the most innovative technology and treatment options. It performs more laprascopic procedures using robotic technology for treating prostate cancer than any other center in the world.
